Hi I’m Warren
Let me tell you, I’m a really smart guy. My fingers are long and beautiful. I love the poorly educated. I have a very good brain and I’ve said a lot of things. I have the best words. I’m also honored to have the greatest temperament that anybody has. I’m a very stable genius. It is what it is.*
I love great quotes. I’ve been collecting these over the years…
Free thinkers are those who are willing to use their minds without prejudice and without fearing to understand things that clash with their own customs, privileges, or beliefs. This state of mind is not common, but it is essential for right thinking: where it is absent, discussion is apt to become worse than useless. Leo Tolstoy
Go into the arts. I’m not kidding. The arts are not a way to make a living. They are a very human way of making life more bearable. Practicing an art, no matter how well or badly, is a way to make your soul grow, for heaven’s sake. Sing in the shower. Dance to the radio. Tell stories. Write a poem to a friend, even a lousy poem. Do it as well as you possibly can. You will get an enormous reward. You will have created something. Kurt Vonnegut
Press on. Nothing in the world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not. Nothing is more common than unsuccessful men with talent. Genius will not. Unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not. The world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent. Calvin Coolidge
This business of burning human beings with napalm, of filling our nation’s homes with orphans and widows, of injecting poisonous drugs of hate into veins of peoples normally humane, of sending men home from dark and bloody battlefields physically handicapped and psychologically deranged, cannot be reconciled with wisdom, justice and love. Martin Luther King
As democracy is perfected, the office represents, more and more closely, the inner soul of the people. We move toward a lofty ideal. On some great and glorious day the plain folks of the land will reach their heart’s desire at last, and the White House will be adorned by a downright moron. H.L. Mencken
I’m disappointed that we didn’t win tonight, but at the end of the season, I want my guys to either be crying because we’ve lost or crying because we’ve just won. And it shows that if you’re not doing one of those, that means you never really became a team. It was never really that important. Coach Mike Krzyzewski
The tools of conquest do not necessarily come with bombs and explosions and fallout. There are weapons that are simply thoughts, attitudes, prejudices, to be found only in the minds of men. For the record, prejudices can kill and suspicion can destroy, and a thoughtless, frightened search for a scapegoat has a fallout all its own — for the children, and the children yet unborn. Rod Serling
A person of good intelligence and of sensitivity cannot exist in this society very long without having some anger about the inequality – and it’s not just a bleeding-heart, knee-jerk, liberal kind of a thing – it is just a normal human reaction to a nonsensical set of values where we have cinnamon flavoured dental floss and there are people sleeping in the street. George Carlin
I will never quit. I persevere and thrive on adversity. My Nation expects me to be physically harder and mentally stronger than my enemies. If knocked down, I will get back up, every time. I will draw on every remaining ounce of strength to protect my teammates and to accomplish our mission. I am never out of the fight. part of the Navy SEAL creed
The master of the art of living makes little distinction between his work and his play, his labor and his leisure, his mind and his body, his education and his recreation, his love and his religion. He simply pursues his vision of excellence in whatever he does, leaving others to decide whether he is working or playing. To him, he is always doing both. Lao-Tzu
Do you ever pause and gasp? Do you ever take a breath and realize it’s just a vast and staggering continuum of energy pouring through, that we’re just here for a tiny eyeblink glimpse of it, barely tasting a drop of an orgiastic sundae? You do? I’m happy to hear it. Because many, if not most, people don’t. Mark Morford
The greatest thing about tomorrow is, I will be better than I am today. And that’s how I look at my life. I will be better as a golfer, I will be better as a person, I will be better as a father, I will be a better husband, I will be better as a friend. That’s the beauty of tomorrow. There is no such thing as a setback. – Tiger WoodsThe lessons I learn today I will apply tomorrow, and I will be better. Tiger Woods
Fear often disguises itself as something else – anger or dislike or derision. Fear can be as tricky as a virus, and just as contagious. It can infect you without your being fully aware of it. It can change the makeup of your personality and, if you let it, end up shaping the contours of your world. Theresa MacPhail
Sympathy’s easy. You have sympathy for starving children swatting at flies on the late-night commercials. Sympathy is easy because it comes from a position of power. Empathy is getting down on your knees and looking someone else in the eye and realizing you could be them, and that all that separates you is luck. Dennis Lehane
My take on people
A few of us
are shining lights of love.
Some of us
are self-serving, power-hungry, mean pieces of shit.
Most of us
want to do the right thing.
All of us
can do better.
My personal values
You’ve heard the expression “namaste” – it literally means “I bow to you”, and more broadly “I honor the light within myself and all others.” Part of honoring the light is being kind to both oneself and all others. (I realize this conflicts somewhat with item two above, BUT I’M WORKING ON IT, REALLY!)
We can’t really have any meaningful connection without honesty.
I know it sounds like something one would value in a machine, but I believe that being reliable is more than doing what’s expected – it’s being there whenever you are needed.
Imagine life without laughter. It would be a very grim existence. I love making people laugh and when people make me laugh. I love laughing with people. It’s strong medicine.
We inhabit our bodies for a short time. I believe we should honor our body and mind as they move us through life by treating them well. Self care is not selfish.
